Ewelina Marciniak directs Wagner’s “Siegfried” at Bühnen Bern
Ewelina Marciniak made her debut at the opera house in Bern in 2021, when she prepared “Das Rheingold” for the Swiss stage. In 2023, she was invited to explore the grand narrative of Wagner’s myth of the Nibelung. After that, she directed “Valkyrie”, the second part of the tetralogy. The current season will see the premiere of the third part “Siegfried“. The show opens on April 14, 2024, with more performances on April 21 and 28, May 5, June 5, 16, 18 and 21.
“Siegfried is a fascinating character. We meet him before he has fully discovered himself as a mature man and developed his male identity according to established patterns. His world is not divided into what is male and what is female. We meet a boy who dreams of adventures and wants to explore the world. That also means an adventure of self-discovery,” says the director.
Marciniak collaborates with other Polish creatives on the production, with set designed by Mirosław Kaczmarek, costumes by Julia Kornacka and choreography by Mikołaj Karczewski.
Miron Hakenbeck has been responsible for the dramaturgy. Nicholas Carter is Musical Director, and Jonathan Stoughton performs the title role.
In Poland, Ewelina Marciniak is primarily known for drama theater. She has directed a number of plays, including: “Morfina” by Twardoch (2014, Silesian Theater, Katowice), “Death and the Maiden” by Jelinek (2015, Polish Theater, Wrocław) or “The Books of Jacob” by Tokarczuk (2016, Zygmunt Hübner Powszechny Theater, Warsaw). She is a full-time director with the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdańsk.
