Journalist Anna S. Dębowska has covered classical music for “Gazeta Wyborcza” daily since 2002. She has now authored a 400-page publication presenting the profiles of nine Polish opera singers.

I am writing about singers who started their professional careers after 1989. They are the artists whose development I have followed and admired for years. Each of the nine portraits is a story about someone with talent, determination, diligence, love for music and hunger for the stage. It is also a record of overcoming adversities and wise calculation necessary to achieve professional success. And about the fact that all these qualities would not bear such abundant fruit if it were not for the stroke of luck necessary in the artistic profession. Who knows what the fate of Piotr Beczała would have been if his wife had run out of gas on the way to Vienna – says the author.

Aside from Piotr Beczała, Dębowska features: Tomasz Konieczny, Jakub Józef Orliński, Aleksandra Kurzak, Ewa Płonka, Mariusz Kwiecień, Artur Ruciński, Andrzej Filończyk and Rafał Siwek. The book will be launched on November 13. Realeased in Polish under the title “Śpiewacy eksportowi. Sukces polskich artystek i artystów operowych,” it can be pre-ordered at PLN 42.99.
