“Man of paper. Anti-opera on credit” at Powszechny Theatre
Anti-opera or gala – referring to Bertolt Brecht’s “Threepenny Opera” and fantasizing about Andrzej Wajda’s never-completed third film from the “Man…” series, the creatives behind the musical performance wonder what it is like to live in Poland with no possesions. The myths and narratives of the 1990s, the ethics of our choices, the use of art for business and political purposes – the above topics have been explored in the new show at the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw.
Jakub Skrzywanek (winner of the Polityka Passport Award in the Theatre category in 2023) directs the performance to the libretto by Piotr Grzymisławski, with lyrics by Jaś Kapela. The music was composed by Karol Nepelski.
The cast features actors from the Powszechny Theatre company: Karolina Adamczyk, Klara Bielawka, Arkadiusz Brykalski, Michał Czachor, Anna Ilczuk, Andrzej Kłak, Olga Rusin (guest appearance), Ewa Skibińska, Oskar Stoczyński.
The performance was shown for the first time at the 44. Stage Songs Review (March 16, 2024) at the Capitol Musical Theatre in Wrocław, featuring guest performers: Ralph Kamiński, Cezary Studniak and Julia Wieniawa. The Warsaw premiere will take place on March 23. There will be two more performances at the Powszechny Theatre, on March 24 and 26.
