María de Buenos Aires” is available at the streaming platform vod.teatrwielki.pl. Directed by Wojciech Faruga, the production premiered at the Polish National Opera  on March 16, 2023.

While composing “María de Buenos Aires” (1968), Astor Piazolla combined opera theater with dance. Although the concept was not new, he replaced classical ballet with tango. For Piazolla, the title María was an allegory for his beloved city. A beautiful and cursed girl, born  “one day when God was drunk” , escapes from poverty and family pathology to the long-awaited freedom. Seduced by the rhythm of tango, she immerses herself in the big city, becomes a sex worker and learns about sex and crime, to eventually die from the hands of street gangsters and brothel matrons. María gains a second life as her own shadow wandering the streets of the metropolis.
