On Sunday, April 14, KinoMaestro.pl will show Offenbach’s “La Périchole” recorded at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris in November 2022. The production, directed by Laurent Pelly and conducted by Marc Minkowski, will be screened in selected cinemas across Poland.

The libretto takes us to back to the 18th century Lima, the capital of Peru. The Viceroy falls in love with a street girl La Périchole and offers her offers her a chance to become a lady-in-waiting. La Périchole does not reciprocate his feelings as she loves a street singer Piquillo. However, since she has had nothing to eat for several days, she has reached such a pitch of starvation that she accepts the proposal. An avalanche of funny events is triggered, which eventually lead to a happy ending.

The famous laughing aria – a song adored by opera lovers worldwide, comes from this operetta, and the role of the strong and brave Peruvian woman La Périchole has been performed by such legendary singers as American soprano Anna Moffo or Canadian singer Teresa Stratas.

The creative team behind the show is the production tandem: Marc Minkowski and Laurent Pelly. The conductor and director have worked together for over 25 years, specializing in Offenbach’s works (“La Belle Hélène” and “La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein”). The main characters are performed by Marina Viotti, Stanislas de Barbeyrac and Laurent Naouri.

The duration of the performance in the original French language version with Polish surtitles is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes (including one intermission). The list of cinemas can be found here.
