Soprano Magdalena Lucjan winner of the prestigious Neue Stimmen vocal competition
Magdalena Lucjan from Poland and Alejandro Baliñas Vieites from Spain are the winners of the 20th edition of the Neue Stimmen International Vocal Competition. In the final session in Gütersloh, Germany, they convinced the jury of world-famous opera experts led by Dominique Meyer, artistic director of La Scala in Milan. Young singers have scooped a cash prize of EUR 15,000 each.
The musicians were accompanied by the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Darlington. Interestingly, the Polish singer had not qualified for the final round. She was nominated by the jury after the semi-final stage to replace Martina Russomanno, who could not perform due to illness. During the final concert, Lucjan sang, among others, Roksana’s song „Sleep, King Roger’s bloody dreams” from Karol Szymanowski’s opera “King Roger.” The entire final concert can be watched on the OperaVision streaming platform.
Magdalena Lucjan, born in 1999, has already succeeded in other vocal competitions. In 2023, she won the 2nd Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in Katowice. This season, the Polish soprano can be heard on the stage of the Semperoper in Dresden and at the Aalto-Musiktheater in Essen.
