The Vienna State Opera has inaugurated the 27th edition of the Safety Curtain series. This time, the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist was invited to paint the curtain, which she titled “Abdominal Cavity Flies Over a Dam.”

Pipilotti Rist’s work, printed on plastic nets and attached to the curtain with magnets, will be exhibited at the Vienna State Opera until the end of the artistic season, i.e. until the end of June 2025. It will be displayed before the start of the performances, during the intermissions and at the end of the shows.

In 1998, the non-profit artistic initiative Museum in Progress, together with the Vienna State Opera, launched an extraordinary contemporary art exhibition project entitled “Safety Curtain.” Once a year, a contemporary painting is presented on the 176-square-meter curtain of the Vienna Opera House. The first invited painter was American artist Kara Walker, and the last was the German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, who, inspired by the novel by the Polish writer Stanisław Lem, named his work “Solaris (for Stanisław Lem)”.
