The Met: Live in HD – Lise Davidsen as the fiery Floria Tosca in cinemas across Poland
The eighteenth edition of the award-winning opera series The Met: Live in HD 2024/25 is underway. Following the season opening screening of Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann” on October 5, 2024, the time has now come for Puccini’s operatic hit “Tosca.” The performance will be shown on November 23. The full list of cinemas, theaters, operas and philharmonic halls can be found here.
Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen will sing the fiery Floria Tosca for the first time at the Met. She will be accompanied by tenor Freddie De Tommaso, making his debut on the New York stage, as Cavaradossi, and baritone Quinn Kelsey as the ruthless Scarpia. The spectacular staging was created by Sir David McVicar and will be conducted by the Met’s Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Following the 1900 premiere in Rome, “Tosca” quickly became a staple of the operatic repertoire. The libretto tells the story of two lovers: a painter (Mario Cavaradossi) and an opera singer (Floria Tosca), who become embroiled in the political conflict between a political fugitive (Cesare Angelotti) and the local police prefect (Baron Scarpia). The greatest arias from “Tosca” include “E lucevan le stele” and “Vissi d’arte”.
From the moment the curtain rises, Puccini engages the audience with five characteristic chords that are associated with the evil of Scarpia, the infamous police prefect. His desire for Floria Tosca knows no limits.
The current season’s edition of The Met: Live in HD also features: “Aida” by Verdi (January 25, 2025), “Fidelio” by Beethoven (March 15, 2025), “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart (26 April 2025), “Salome” by Strauss (17 May 2025) and “The Barber of Seville” by Rossini (May 31, 2025). Saturday afternoon performances will be broadcast.
