“Tosca” with Izabela Matuła and Andrzej Dobber concludes the 79th season at the Silesian Opera in Bytom
The Silesian Opera ends its 79th artistic season on June 22, with Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca.” On June 25, the production will be shown at the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theater in Katowice.
The Bytom cast features Izabela Matuła (Tosca), Łukasz Załęski (Cavaradossi) and Andrzej Dobber (Scarpia), alongside Bogdan Kurowski and Grzegorz Szostak (Angelotti), Zbigniew Wunsch (Sacristian), Maciej Komandera (Spoletta), Witold Dewor (Sciarrone). Vincent Dobber (Andrzej Dobber’s son) will make his debut on the Bytom stage as the Shepherd. Irish conductor Marc Shanahan will lead the Chorus and Orchestra of the Silesian Opera.
Following the 1900 premiere in Rome, “Tosca” quickly became a staple of the operatic repertoire. The libretto tells the story of two lovers: a painter (Mario Cavaradossi) and an opera singer (Floria Tosca), who become embroiled in the political conflict between a political fugitive (Cesare Angelotti) and the local police prefect (Baron Scarpia). The greatest arias from “Tosca” include “E lucevan le stele” and “Vissi d’arte”.
From the moment the curtain rises, Puccini engages the audience with five characteristic chords that are associated with the evil of Scarpia, the infamous police prefect. His desire for Floria Tosca knows no limits.
