The Royal Theatre in the Old Orangery at the Royal Łazienki Museum in Warsaw holds world premiere of the opera “HI§TORY” based on “History” (Operetta) by Witold Gombrowicz. The show, directed by Maciej Wojtyszko and Jakub Kofta, opens on November 23.

Michał Dobrzyński plays a double role of composer and librettist. He prepared the text of the opera based on Gombrowicz’s unfinished drama “History”, including fragments that have never been published before. Copies of the manuscripts were personally provided to the composer by Mrs. Rita Gombrowicz. Dobrzyński thus revisits the creative concept behind his “Operetta” staged at the Warsaw Chamber Opera in 2015.

“One of the main objects of my writing is to cut a path through Unreality to Reality,” Gombrowicz stated. Michał Dobrzyński takes this thought to a new dimension, using the universal language of music. The unfinished drama leaves a lot of space for musical interpretation. As the composer himself emphasizes: “the clarity of thought and the clear readability of Gombrowicz’s characters-symbols […] seem to correlate in some special way with the contemporary history we witness with our own eyes.”

Featuring: Michał Sławecki, Iwona Lubowicz, Aneta Łukaszewicz, Małgorzata Pańko-Edery, Robert Gierlach, Paweł Michalczuk, Łukasz Hajduczenia, Robert Szpręgiel, Witold Żołądkiewicz, Dorota Lachowicz, Monika Ledzion-Porczyńska, Joanna Freszel, Piotr Halicki and Sylwester Smulczyński.

The second premiere will take place on November 24. The event was included in the calendar of celebrations of the Year of Witold Gombrowicz, announced by the Senate of the Republic of Poland.
