Initiative of the Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, the first edition of the festival was held in the Tricity agglomeration in 2023. The concept of the Baltic Opera Festival is to present premiere opera productions featuring singers and creatives from Poland and abroad. The project was inspired by the pre-war tradition of staging opera works in Sopot, thanks to which the city was called the Bayreuth of the North in the 1930s.
