Teatro Real in Madrid and Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich will premiere “The Passenger” by Polish composer Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) on March 1 and 10, respectively. The Spanish audience will see the opera staged by David Pountney (conducted by Mirga Gražinytè-Tyla) – a co-production that was shown, among others, at the Bregenz Festival and the Polish National Opera (2010). In Germany, the new version of “The Passenger” is directed by Tobias Kratzer, with Vladimir Jurowski as musical director.

The libretto based around the autobiographical novel by Zofia Posmysz was written by Aleksandr Medvedev. The plot of the opera is set on a luxury ocean liner. During the cruise, a Polish woman Marta identifies an elegant female passenger Lisa as one of the SS guards in Auschwitz. Completed in 1968, the opera has not been performed for decades. The world premiere of the concert version took place in Moscow in 2006.
