What opens and what closes the door for women in the opera world? – debate at Szczecin’s Opera at the Castle
The Opera at the Castle in Szczecin extends an invitation to a debate on the role of female directors in contemporary opera. The panel discussion will feature three directors whose productions have been presented on the stage of the opera in Szczecin: Natalia Babińska (“The Turn of the Screw” by Britten), Pia Partum (“The Trial” by Glass) and Barbara Wiśniewska (“Trubadur” by Verdi).
From composers and conductors to directors, opera has traditionally been very male dominated. In the 21st century, women have slowly begun changing this old pattern. The discussion will address the problem of female directors breaking through the patriarchal opera model, as well as different approach of women and men to libretto or to working with the cast. The panelists will also talk about what opens and what closes the door for women in the opera world.
The debate will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at 6 p.m. in the O. Gallery at the Opera at the Castle. The accompanying performance will feature soloists Joanna Tylkowska-Drożdż and Victoria Vatutina, as well as Olga Bila at the piano. The meeting will be hosted by Jacek Jekiel, director of the Opera at the Castle.
